Lakshadweep Announces Easier Travel Rules for Tourists in 2026

Great news for tourists. By May 2026, the Lakshadweep administration had significantly simplified tourist entry procedures to promote tourism.

Specific upcoming changes for the tourists are:

  • 1.     No Local Sponsor Required: Tourists no longer need a local resident or agent to sponsor their visit.

  • 2.     No Police Clearance Needed: The mandatory police clearance certificate from the traveller's home town has been removed.

  • 3.     Simplified Application Process: Security checks will be handled directly by the Lakshadweep Police after the online application is submitted.

  • 4.     Application Timing: Applications must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the intended travel date.

  • 5.     Specific Island Limitations: Travellers must specify their intended islands and travel dates. Travellers can only visit the islands listed in their permit.

  • 6.     Transit Restrictions: Transit points are restricted to Kavaratti or Agatti, with a maximum transit time of 12 hours.

Important reminders:

  • Entry Permits: Still mandatory for all non-islanders.
  • Apply Online: The official E-Permit Portal handles all applications.
  • Bookings: It is advised to book flights and accommodation only after receiving the approved permit.
